Home Schooling

Overview

SchoolWhen overseas, you might be homeschooling your children due to various reasons. Please contact us to let us know if we can be of help to you in locating resources, or if you’d like to talk to someone who has homeschooled overseas and/or is homeschooling in Canada.

When returning to Canada, you might want to continue homeschooling due to issues with curriculum in schools, bullying, or to provide continuity for your children as they adjust or readjust to life in Canada.

Most provinces allow homeschooling and some provinces have very good systems and associations set up for homeschoolers. We have tried to give you some links to associations across the country that can give you more information. There are also many homeschooling networks of parents and teachers that provide support to homeschool families as well as Home Learners Conventions in some provinces.

The Association of Canadian Home-Based Education (ACHBE) provides support, advice and information. It has links to every province and territory.

British Columbia

In B.C., you can choose ‘traditional home learning’ or ‘distributed learning’. In either case, you need to register or enroll your child at a school. In a nutshell, Traditional Home Learning allows you to choose the curriculum you use, without interference. The school you register with might give you around $150 towards books and supplies for each child. This method allows you complete freedom, but your child would not receive the “Dogwood” (high school diploma).

Distributed Learning allows you freedom in choosing curriculum in discussion with the Curriculum Co-ordinator of the school you choose to enroll in. You or your child reports to assigned teachers each week. Three times a year, portfolios are due and report cards are given. The B.C. government gives $3,000 to the school to cover expenses of administration, teachers’ salaries, etc. and $1,000 of that is allocated to you to buy curriculum, books, and to pay for extra-curricular events and classes. This money is not given to you directly but to the school. If you choose DL for your child, the teachers of the school will track “Provincial Learning Outcomes” to ensure your child/ren are meeting the guidelines of the BC government. They will guide you towards the government exams given in Grades 10, 11 and 12 and the end result is that your child will receive a “Dogwood” (high school diploma).
